BIG CROWD AT ST JAMES'S PARK SEE CITY DRAW.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 28TH 1963:

EXETER CITY 0 BRIGHTON 0

One of the biggest crowds of the season jostled their way through the turnstiles in time to see Brighton kick-off towards the town end and facing the sun. The official count was 9,873. In the first Brighton attack Barnett saved at full length from Jackson.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Thorne, Grace, and Phoenix.

Brighton: Powney; Sanders and Jennings; Bertolini, Burtenshaw, and Turner; Cooper, Collins, Webber, Jackson, and Goodchild.

Referee: Mr B.S.Setchell, of Luton.

This was certainly not one of the best showings by the City, but the rugged and determined Brighton side never let them settle down. But the City's defence was as solid as ever, with Harvey, MacDonald, and Anderson outstanding.

Match Report 2

In a game with all the hectic action of a promotion battle but little calm, constructive football, Exeter City and Brighton battled it out to a goalless draw, Brighton never let City settle into their smooth stride, with a tough determined display, they tackled quickly with fearsome power that shook some of the City players, City's forwards seldom showed the bright ideas or sudden bursts of speed that might have enabled them to pierce Brighton's strong defence, They seemed jaded and even Banks found it impossible to slip away from his shadow like markingThorne was guilty of a terrible miss lofting the ball over an open goal from five yards with the goalkeeper on the ground, All the outstanding performance were in the City defence, everyone expects Harvey to play well in every game, this time he excelled himself. Anderson saw a tremendous amount of action while MacDonald seems back to his best form. The only time Brighton pierced the rearguard, Collins rattled the crossbar with a 25 yard shot.
