Match 33

Bradford (Away)

Western League
Taunton (h)

THE END OF EXETER CITY'S LONG UNBEATEN RUN.

SATURDAY JANUARY 25TH 1964:

BRADFORD 3 EXETER CITY 2.

Attendance 6,273

Although City lost there was no lack of fight, for they played as well as in the majority of
games this season. The big fault was the missing of three chances. In a good game Bradford played well above their lowly position and while the City did almost everything they could, Bradford did better, They played with a four man defence so City's tactics of working the ball around until they could find a gap and then making a quick break through were obviously right. Spratt who was given a second chance as he collected the rebound off his first shot gave Bradford a fourth minute lead, but once City got going they had two thrids of the play and after Rees had hit a post, Banks got a vell deserved equaliser. Faster to the ball and more accurate Exeter looked the better side, but their finishing, let them down, Grace got a good 49th minute goal to give them the lead but midway through the second half Bird equalised, City continued to miss chances, but Thorne and Banks being the culprits both when well placedExeter paid dearly for not scoring when Hector stole in to score the Bradford vinner 20 minutes from time. In the simplest of terms it was just a game that was lost and no amount of analytical discussion will bring a really satisfactory answer or save the points now.

Match Summary

Exeter City after a run of ten unbeaten League games lost by 3-2 at Park Avenue, Bradford, this afternoon. The conditions were a complete contrast to those at Southport last week. There the ground had been frozen hard with an icy gale from goal to goal and a crowd of less than two thousand shivering on the spacious slopes. Now, at Bradford, the ground was soft and sticky with grass showing only in the corners. The weather was mild, there was no wind apart from a gentle breeze, and the crowd amounted to close on eight thousand.

Bradford:- Hardie; Thomas and Jones; McCalman, Cook, and Flynn; Burns, Spratt, Atkinson, Hector, and Bird.

Exeter City:- Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Henderson, Grace, and Thorne.
Referee: Mr W.Haynes of Wigan.

This was a hard-fought game against a Bradford side which has shown much improved form in recent weeks. The City played some good football, also some hard football. They also missed one or two very easy chances. Their goals were obtained by Banks before the interval and Grace after it.
