DARLINGTON 1
Penman; Peverall, Storton; Atkinson, D.Robson, Duffy; Rayment, Lawton, L. Robson, Allison, McGeochie,
EXETER CITY 1
Barnett; Smyth, MacDonald; Mitchell, Harvey, Anderson; Rees, Banks, Thorne, Grace, Ley, Scorer Darlington Robson, Exeter City Rees
Attendance 2,647,
Referee A, Jones (Liverpool),
There were several factors against Exeter City, the rough and tumble tactics of Darlington, the occasional bad run of the ball at a vital moment and the sometimes baffling decisions and indecisions of the officials, They all went against the City giving a proper account of themselves, at the same time one always had the feeling that they should be doing just a little better. In the first half City were helped by an injury to Darlington's left back Storton and City raided down the left side, Ley had a goal ruled offside, Rees hit a post and Banks had a lob miraculously headed out from under the bar. In the second half Darlington packed their defence, City still had most of the play but came to a halt when they reached the penalty area as they tried to equalise Darlington's first minute goal from Robson, Then for the second successive week City were saved by a Rees goal, with a neat header from a Thorne cross with just four minutes remaining, it was close, too close for comfort but it was well deserved, Smyth was back in defence after two weeks rest to playing almost as well as ever abd as efficiently as any other defender on the field,
Match Summary
Smyth returned to the Exeter City defence in place of Roy Patrick, who is injured, while Thorne moved into the middle of the forward line, with Exminster-born George Ley on the left wing. Darlington scored against the run of the play in the first half, and it took the City a long time to get the equaliser. They had fought hard if not too cleverly in a scrappy sort of game, and had had one or two slices of very bad luck.
