Match 40
14th March 1964
Rochdale (Away)

Western League
Andover Town (h)

CITY BEAT THE ROCHDALE HOODOO AT LAST.
SATURDAY MARCH 14TH:

ROCHDALE 1 EXETER CITY 3.

At the Willbutts Lane ground, Rochdale, the players came out on to a pitch which was holding a lot of water on the surface and which had grass only in the corners. Exeter were facing their jinx team, who had until today won seven of the nine encounters between these sides, and who are the only team to have beaten Exeter at St James's Park so far this season.

Rochdale: Burgin; Milburn and Martin;
Taylor, Aspden, and Thompson; Wragg, Morton, Richardson, McKenzie, and Storf.

Exeter City: Barnett; Smyth and MacDonald; Grace, Harvey, and Anderson; Rees, Banks, Curtis, Henderson, and Thorne.

The conditions of the ground at Rochdale made football of any kind almost impossible, especially for the sort of stuff the City have been used to playing this season. And so although they had a fair share of luck the City must get a lot of credit for finally getting a win at Rochdale. Everyone fought tremendously hard, and the experiment of playing Henderson as the link man came off because of his powerful and accurate distribution of the ball in the cloying mud.

STEVENS NOT FOR CITY.

Exeter City will not be signing Swindon Town 20 year old centre forward John Stevens, this despite being watchedby director Les Kerslake and City skipper Arnold Mitchell on Saturday when he scored two goals in a reserve game. He will be watched again and may be a prospect for next season, There definitely will be a new face at St James's Park tomorrow though, he is 20 year old Scottish forward Walter Gerrard, who is at present on amateur forms with a Scottish First Division side, he will be having a weeks trial with the City.

TUESDAY 17th MARCH 1964.

HANCOCK SIGNS JUST BEFORE MIDNOIGHT.

Exeter City team manager Jack Edwards and secretary Mr Keith Honey, made a late dash to Torquay last night to sign United's wing half Dave Hancock for £1,000 15 minutes before the main transfer deadline for this season. Negotiations between the two clubs had twice broken down and yesterday afternoon City decided they would not pay the Torquay price. Mr Edwards was however, left free to change his mind and he did just that. Hancock born in Exeter, started his professional career with Plymouth Argyle and was then loaned to Gillingham for a month before being transferred to Torquay United in December 1958, He has played in more than 170 League games for Torquay and had two previous transfer requests turned down, His latest came after being dropped from the side before Xmas and was unable to regain his place.

THURSDAY 19th MARCH 1964.

HENDERSON IS OFF THE CITY LIST.

John Henderson, the Exeter City inside forward and joint highest scorer who went on the transfer list at his own request last month has now changed his mind, No League club had made approaches for his by the time the transfer deadline closed at midnight on Monday, so he asked the board to be removed from the transfer list and they agreed, He had received one offer from a Southern League side which he turned down
