Southern League
Stoke (Away)
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6th 1911.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
STOKE V EXETER CITY
Although it was raining quite steadily there was a crowd of six thousand. A high wind also prevailed, but despite these adverse conditions some high quality football was seen from both teams.
STOKE:- Cartlidge Smart Hay Jones McGillivray Grieve Dyke, W.E.Smith Peart A.Smith Hardman
CITY:- Chapman Evans Coates Bassett
Pratt, Griffiths, Parnell Cornan Lockett Watson Garside.
From the kick-off Stoke went off at a great pace, and in three minutes Peart scored a neat goal for them. After this the City halves came more into the picture, and held the home forwards in check. Garside equalised within ten minutes of Peart's goal, and gave Exeter the lead a quarter of an hour before half-time.
EXETER 2 STOKE
In the second half the game became unnecessarily rough, and a number of players were cautioned. Garside scored a third goal for Exeter City, thus completing his "hat-trick". The Potters rallied strongly for a few minutes, but the nearest they came to scoring was when a shot by Peart hit the crossbar.
The remaining play was mainly in Stoke's favour, but the City defence held firm.
Result: Exeter City 3, Stoke 1.
