Merthyr T
Played at Ashton Gate
Monday, November 27th 1911. MERTHYR TOWN v EXETER CITY.
After playing drawn games at St. James's Park and Merthyr, the teams met for the third time in the F.A. Cup Competition at the Bristol City F.C. ground, where Merthyr won by two goals to nil. There were several hundred spectators.
Merthyr were the better team in the first half, scoring after five minutes through Costello. Both defences were in good form, though each goal survived some narrow escapes. Savage and Lowe went very close for Merthyr, and Whittaker, for Exeter, had a shot cleared off the line by White. The second half began at a fast pace, and Exeter displayed greater ability than they had done before the interval. Their forwards, however, shot badly when presented with reasonable openings, and Griffiths, Lockett, and Whittaker were the most guilty in this respect.
Play became rough and the game was several times stopped for fouls, several players being injured. Fifteen minutes from the end Costello scored from close range, and this second goal signalled Exeter City's good-bye to the cup competition for this season.
MERTHYR:- Lewis; White, Holmes; Craig, Russell, Savage, Burnison, Costello, Lowe, and Dodds. Churchill;
EXETER CITY:- Whittaker (W); Evans, Coates; Bassett, Chadwick, Prideaux; Whittaker (E), Watson, Griffiths, Lockett, Parnell.
Comments: It was a poor match, and the City forwards fairly gave it away by failing to utilise their chances. They did the majority of the attacking, especially in the second half, but gave an uncommonly weak display of shooting. With any normal degree of accuracy they could have won easily. They would have then qualified for a visit to Crewe Alexandra in the next cup round, instead of Merthyr. Yet the Merthyr forwards, with far fewer chances, scored the two goals which decided the game.
- EXETER CITY'S NEW CAPTAIN.
The resignation of Exeter City's captain, R. Watson, has been accepted by the directors, and W. Whittaker has been appointed to fill the vacancy.
