Southern League
Norwich City (Home)
Plymouth and District League
Royal Scots Regiment (a)
Saturday, December 9th 1911.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
CITY v NORWICH.
The crowd at St. James's Park this afternoon was affected by the big counter-attraction at St. Thomas's, where Devon against Somerset, Rugby County Championship match, was being played. Pratt, Parnell, and Garside are still on the injured list, and the City fielded an unchanged side in the hope that today's game would bring about their long-deferred victory at home. Chenne our was therefore given the chance of appearing in the Southern League side at home for the first time. He is a locally born player, whose father is an old athlete, and who, in his day, was known as one of the best runners in the West of England. The Norwich party, including the Chairman, one of the other directors, and the trainer, stopped at Teignmouth last night, and arrived on the ground in good time. They had decided to play Birchall at outside-left in place of Noble. Exeter then notified a late change, Lockett replacing Griffiths, also at out-side left. Teams:
EXETER CITY: Whittaker (W) Evans Coates Rigby Bassett Prideaux Whittaker(E) Watson Chenneour Cornan Lockett
Referee: Mr W. Dockrill, of Luton.
NORWICH CITY: Beale Hampson Mackenzie Pearson Wolstenholme Bibby Birchall Woods Stringfellow Ingham Jobling
The ground was very wet as the result of all the recent heavy rain, and patches of mud were showing through the grass at the top end. It was absolutely against good football, in fact. The crowd was very small before the start, and at two o'clock there was only a mere handful, so to speak, at the ground. The crowd came in later, but at the kick-off there were still only about two thousand present. Wolstenholme won the toss, but little advantage was gained thereby. Chenneour kicked off, and Mackenzie made a rather weak clearance, but recovered and set Birchall going. The ball went over the line at Exeter's end, then Watson dribbled past Bibby and gave to Whittaker, who was promptly whistled up for offside. Pearson and Wolstenholme between them got the better of Lockett when he looked dangerous, and Mackenzie cleared from Watson almost on the line. Prideaux checked the Norwich forwards, and Hampson kicked clear when Lockett put the ball into the centre, then was knocked out in a collision with Prideaux. Hampson save a certain goal by heading out from Lockett's header right underneath the bar, and when Norwich attacked Birchall was stopped by Rigby after Stringfellow had fed him a nice pass. Mackenzie cleared another fine centre from the left wing, where Lockett was showing better form than he had in his other games at inside-left and right. Woods could not get round Bassett, and the ball came back to the Norwich end, where Watson put it in the net, but the whistle had already gone for an infringement.
A Rare Scrimmage.
Chenneour got offside in attempting to ram home a centre by Whittaker, and later shot weakly when rushing in to meet a ground pass from Cornan. But the young centre-forward did well to manouevre an opening for Lockett, whose shot crashed against the top of the crossbar, and bounced out of play. The goal-kick was weak, and Bassett volleyed it straight back to the Norwich penalty area, where a rare scrimmage took place, about ten players being concerned in the mix-up. Chenneour finally lifting the ball over the bar. In a rare Norwich attack Birchall was pulled up for offside, and then Whittaker, who until then had not had much to do, punched out a shot from Ingham. Chenne our went through on his own, but was stopped by Hampson, and once he got the ball out very smartly to E. Whittaker, and Exeter, towards the close of the first half, were attacking almost non-stop without being able to get a goal. Stringfellow's knee gave out, and he had to go off, but a minute or two later the whistle blew for the half-time interval, with nothing scored.
Second Half.
Woods led a Norwich attack which was stopped by Bassett, then Mackenzie made a weak clearance but Pearson dropped back and retrieved the situation. Stringfellow returned with his knee bandaged up, and in a sharp Exeter attack Whittaker put his centre out of play on the far side. A clever dribble by Cornan was stopped by Mackenzie, the ball going behind for a corner which was cleared by Wolstenholme. Cornan got through again, however, and just missed by inches with another fine drive. Play had slowed down in this half, the underfoot conditions no doubt being responsible, but Exeter were still having most of the play yet finding it difficult to break down a resolute Norwich defence.
A Mix-Up.
Rigby cleared for Exeter after Evans had miskicked, the ball going straight to Birchall, and directly afterwards the winger again dazzled Evans with a brilliant piece of dribbling. Then, to make matters worse, Prideaux got in Whittaker's way as he ran out to clear, and Bassett had to drop back to stave off the attack. The mix-up between Evans, Prideaux, and Whittaker almost gave Norwich a lead they did not deserve. Lockett forced a corner off Hampson but E. Whittaker put the flag-kick over the bar and behind on the opposide side.
The Winning Goal.
After twenty minutes Exeter gave their supporters something to cheer. Jobling was tackled by Watson, who swept out a long pass to Enos Whittaker. The young winger made ground at a fast pace and put across a perfect centre to Lockett, who met the ball first-time and booted it into the net without a moment's hesitation, giving Beale no earthly chance. It was one of the best goals seen at St. James's Park this season, and one is tempted to add that there have not been that many goals of any sort, good or bad, since the New Brompton affair. The City continued to have the best of the game, and once Watson nearly added a second goal, but Beale ran out and got to the ball first.
Final: Exeter City 1, Norwich City 0.
