THE SOUTHERN CHARITY CUP
Replayed Tie, at Home Park
ARGYLE v. CITY
The replay of the second round tie for the Charity Cup, between the Devon clubs, should have been played in November, but had to be postponed on account of the City's two replays against Merthyr Town in the English Cup. After beating Swindon Town at St.James's Park in the first round on September 20th, the City and Argyle played a drawn match, no score, at Exeter on October 18th. The clubs have yet to meet in the League this season, but engaged one another in a "friendly" at Home Park on September 27th, the result on that occasion also being a drawn game, one goal each.
ARGYLE:- Sutcliffe Butler Forbes McCormick Wilcox Baker Kirkpatrick Malcolm Thom Sutherland Bowler
Referee: Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.
CITY:- Chapman Evans Coates Rigby Bassett Prideaux Lockett Bailey Griffiths Watson Whittaker(E).
Rain fell heavily, and completely spoiled the turf at Home Park. It also affected the attendance, for the crowd of just under 2,000 was a poor one for a "Devon Derby". Exeter had a gale of wind behind them in the first half, but Plymouth were a far superior combination, and attacked almost incessantly. Malcolm was guilty of some wild shooting and threw away several easy chances. When Exeter transferred play to the other end Sutcliffe rushed out of his goal to dispossess Watson, but when the ball came out to Whittaker his shot went behind. Thom was showing splendid form, and after he had twice been stopped by Evans he fastened on to a centre from Kirkpatrick, and beat Chapman with a first time shot.
Half-time: Argyle 1 City 0.
On resuming Plymouth again dominated the play, Bowler and Kirkpatrick making several brilliant runs, but twice more Malcolm failed in front of goal after his wingers had given him the ball. At last the Argyle defence was caught out of position, and after Sutcliffe had repelled one shot Watson equalised. Griffiths, Evans, and Kirkpatrick were all injured in going for the ball together, and the two last-named were taken off. The Argyle remained the better side, and Sutherland scored the winning goal five minutes from the end. Bowler, of the Sherwood Foresters, and Thom, who has been secured by transfer from Dumfries, were both making their first appearances for the Pilgrims.
RESULT:
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 2, EXETER CITY 1.
