Boxing Day Football at Exeter.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 1 EXETER CITY 0 Last season: Argyle 3 City 1.
In 1909-10: Argyle 4 City 2.
The return game between the Argyle and Exeter City took place on Boxing Day afternoon before a large crowd. Although the weather had cleared up after the storms of Christmas Day the ground was very wet and muddy, and the possibility of good football on such a pitch seemed remote, to say the least. Plymouth Argyle fielded the same eleven as on Christmas Day, but further changes were made by Exeter, with Chadwick turning out at centre-half, Walter Whittaker in goal, and a newcomer, W. Caddy, at left back. Teams :
CITY:- Whittaker (W) Evans Caddy Rigby Chadwick Bassett Whittaker(E) Kent Watson Cornan Lockett
Referee: Mr W.E. Russell, of Swindon.
ARGYLE:- Dixon Raymond Boden Burch Kirkpatrick Dixon Raymond Boden Burch Kirkpatrick
Atterbury was soon called upon to clear an Exeter attack, then clever work by the Argyle forwards placed the home goal in danger, but Whittaker eventually cleared. The City won a corner, which proved abortive, and for a time they had the better of the game. A brilliant centre by Kirkpatrick, in a
promising Argyle move, was lifted high over by Dixon. Evans was prominent in the City defence, twice stopping Dixon with excellent tackles. A free kick to Exeter spelt danger, but during the attack Cornan was injured and had to be taken off. Wilcox relieved the pressure on the Argyle goal, and Kirkpatrick, by far their best forward in the Christmas Day match at Home Park, dashed through at a great pace towards the City end. He outstripped Caddy and sent in a swift cross-shot, and Whittaker effected an equally brilliant clearance amid enthusiastic applause. Chadwick was fouled near the Argyle penalty line, but Caddy put the ball behind from the free kick. Exeter gained another corner, which was cleared well upfield, and Bassett conceded a flag-kick to Argyle in stopping Boden. Dixon, however, placed the ball too near the goal, and it landed on top of the net. Whittaker saved a grounder from Wilcox, and Boden was only inches wide following a free kick against Chadwick. Watson sent E. Whittaker off on the home right wing, and the Grecians lost a splendid chance of opening the score from his centre, the ball travelling right across the goalmouth with no other forward able to reach it. Exeter forced several attacks, but the Plymouth backs were remarkably sound under the heavy pressure. Just before the interval W.Whittaker was responsible for three brilliant clearances, and it was plain that Exeter's famous goalkeeper had lost none of his well known ability during his enforced absence from the game.
Half-time:
CITY 0-0 ARGYLE..
Second Half.
After Horne had saved from Lockett the Argyle retaliated strongly, and Wilcox shot just over the bar. Kent followed suit at the other end from rather a wild pass by Watson. Boden and Burch both missed a centre by Dixon, the forwards slithering about on the heavy ground in their efforts to reach the ball. A brilliant run by Burch almost ended disastrously for Exeter, the ball being passed to Boden, whose shot went just outside the far upright at tremendous speed. A further attack was halted by Raymond getting bogged down in the mud, and Caddy dashed in and cleared. The Argyle continued to exert pressure on the City goal, and midway through the second period they opened the scoring. Raymond broke through, swung the ball across the goalmouth and Boden netted smartly from six yards' range. Exeter restarted with plenty of spirit, and from a corner kick finely placed by E. Whittaker, Lockett headed just wide. The City were lucky again when Kirkpatrick was badly fouled by Chadwick, the free-kick, from near the touchline, being some how scrambled away. Watson shot wide from another dangerous centre by Lockett, and Rigby stopped Dixon when the Argyle winger was looking like getting into a good position right in front of the posts. The Argyle were attacking when the final whistle blew, with the score remaining: Argyle 1-0 Exeter City
Comments.
Both sides played excellent football, though the underfoot conditions were all against it. Plymouth pressed for most of the first half in vain, but Boden settled the issue later on following a ground centre from Raymond and an exciting skirmish round the City's goalmouth. Exeter put up a stern resistance, and prevented any further scoring, but they were handicapped by the absence of Cornan, the inside-left having gone off with an injury early in the game.

Plymouth and District League
There was a large crowd at Home Park to witness the return Plymouth League encounter between the reserve sides of the two Devon clubs. The ground was in a saturated condition, which appeared to suit the Argyle, for they won a runaway victory and showed decided superiority throughout. They fielded an experimental eleven, with Holden in goal and Thom left-half, while Exeter were unfortunate in having only ten men, as Pym missed the train. Goodyer, a forward, took his place. For the first fifteen minutes matters were even, but the Argyle gradually forced the pace, and once Worden had opened the scoring goals followed at regular intervals, and Exeter were routed by no fewer than eight to nil. The remaining goalscorers were Daniels (two) and Worden before the interval, then Daniels (the fifth) and Worden the sixth, seventh, and eighth. Griffiths and Clarke did their best to try and stem the tide, but the Exeter forward line was hardly ever in the game, and Goodyer, who is not a goalkeeper, could not be blamed for allowing eight shots to pass him.
