New Brompton v City.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 6th 1912.
With both teams doing only moderately well, a close game was anticipated at Gillingham today, but the weather was very cold and damp, and only two thousand spectators were present. The City had Tompkinson, their new centre-forward, on trial, and the teams were:
NEW BROMPTON:
Bailey Mosley Nobbs Mahon Lee Kelly
Church Taylor Didfmas Court John
Referee:- Mr. T. Kirkham.
EXETER CITY: Crute Fort Evans Rigby Bassett Prideaux Whittaker Lockett Tompinkson Cornan Pratt
It was raining heavily when Tompkinson kicked off for the Grecians on a treacherous looking pitch, and after Cornan had made a rush on the left, the New Bromptonians reached the City end, where Lee almost scored with a swift shot. A further shot, this time by Court, struck Evans foot and went for a corner, which was unproductive. Some clever passing by the visiting forwards made ground, but Rutter lost a likely chance through handling, while Lockett was penalised for offside when well placed. Despite the conditions there was plenty of pace, but the Brompton backs played their characteristic game of placing their opponents offside, both Rutter and Whittaker falling into the trap. After 12 minutes John executed a brilliant dribble, and after going past at least three City defenders finished up with a beautiful shot into the net for the opening goal. The Grecians' forwards were fairly fast on the ball, but could not devise a method of beating the home backs. Rutter once received a fine pass from Lockett, and outpacing Mosley had a grand opportunity to equalise, but instead of going on himself he passed across the goal, and Mahon was on hand to clear a dangerous situation. A bad foul by Lee, on Lockett, gave Exeter a free-kick from which Cornan almost scored, but Bailey saved, although only with difficulty. Ten minutes from the interval Taylor gave Diddams a chance from which he struck the crossbar, and catching the rebound fairly and squarely Court scored from close range. The home side were now playing very good football, and from a square pass by Church, Crute let the ball slip through his hands, and Taylor pushed in a third goal.
Half-time 3-0 .
Nothing further was added to the score until five minutes from time, when Tompkinson netted for Exeter and Court replied for New Brompt on.
Final:
New Brompton 4, Exeter City 1.
CITY RESERVES v TAVISTOCK.
Exeter City Reserves met Tavistock in a downpour of rain and on a sodden pitch at St. James's Park this afternoon, the game being in connection with the Plymouth and District League.
Reserves:- Pym; Stoneman, Labbett; Lewis, Taylor, Letheren; Davey, Arscott, Bailey, Sturman, and Addicott.
Tavistock:- Davy; Huggins, Waldegrave; Bray, Dixon, Spry; Downe, Chubb, Crye, Foster, and Demellwick.
The crowd was a small one, and the few who did brave the miserable conditions were all allowed in the grandstand. Play soon became farcical with the men slipping and floundering in the quagmire, but Exeter, through Arscott, scored within five minutes, and still led by this goal at the interval. Chubb equalised for Tavistock early in the second half, but Lewis quickly put the Reserves in front again, and near the close Bailey scored a third goal for the Reserves. Pym played a brilliant game in goal for Exeter, and when his side was doing badly in the first half he alone prevented a heavy reverse.
Final score:
City 3 goals, Tavistock one.

CITY RESERVES v BABBACOMBE
Friendly Match at St. James's Park
In the absence of any interest in the English Cup, Exeter City arranged a friendly with Babbacombe. The home side was made up of six professionals and five amateurs. There was only a small crowd.
CITY Pym Evans Labbett Rigby Clarke Griffiths Whittaker Lewis Bailey Lockett Rutter
Referee:- Mr W.G.Bastin, of Exeter.
BABBACOMBE
Crute, Morrish Terry Udranfski Birbeck Prowse Turner Gilchrist Burgoyne(F) Triscott Burgoyne (A)
Clarke beat Crute with the toss and chose to play away from the Exeter end. The Grecians at once attacked, and Lewis won a corner off Terry in the first minute. Whittaker and Lockett in turn put their shots high over the bar, and Crute saved a fast grounder from Griffiths near the post. Exeter were doing all the attacking, and Pym did not have to touch the ball until the a. twentieth minute, when he ran out and intercepted flying centre from A.Burgoyne, who had got past Labbett.
The game was remarkable for the number of occasions Exeter got within twelve yards of goal and then failed to score, but they were up against a fine goalkeeper in Crute. The opening goal came at last from Lockett, who fastened on to the ball as it rebounded from one of the uprights from a drive by Bailey. A few minutes before half-time Crute saved a certain goal by Lockett but was beaten by the same player from the rebound.
Half-time 2-nil. Crute blemished an otherwise perfect dis play of goalkeeping midway through the second half by fisting a corner kick from Whittaker into his own net. The onslaught on the Babbacombe goal continued without variation, and five minutes before time Lockett completed the scoring with an un stoppable drive. Final: City Reserves 4 Babbacombe 0.
