While he was at Bonner Road, staff encouraged Walters ever-growing love of football, helping to shape both the life he would lead and the man he would become. Walter trained as a printer but soon made his mark as a footballer, first for the children's home team and then for Clapton F.C. where he won the FA Amateur Cup.
