With all that was going on this season, it's probably fair to say that the Leyland DAF Cup wasn't a major priority when it kicked off on January 15, 1990.
Known today as the EFL Trophy, the tournament first began as the Associate Members' Cup in the 1983/84 season, and was sponsored by the commercial vehicle company, Leyland DAF from 1989-1992.
The 1989/90 competition was won by Tranmere Rovers, who beat City's group opponents, Bristol Rovers 2-1 in front of a 48,402 crowd at Wembley Stadium.
Preliminary Round
In the preliminary round, City were placed in Southern Section Group A with Bristol Rovers and Torquay United.
